Grovetender
Life is
the purpose of Creation. We are the protectors of life. As this world falls
into madness and war our purpose remains clear.
The high cleric of Habastly, Grovetender Emile Plovest, Post 314,
addressing his fellow clerics before the conquest of Habastalai by the
Tinkers.
In Habastly’s wisdom, he saw from the very beginning of the world that there
would be a need to protect nature from the ‘intelligent’ beings. He knew
that this protection could not be absolute, because without nature as a
tool, those beings would not survive, and if that happened, Habololy would
be worth. A balance between nature and civilization needed to exist. Knowing
that those ‘intelligent’ beings could not be wholly trusted to keep that
balance, Habastly inspired some among his clerics to take to the wilderness
and look after nature. These clerics became the first Grovetenders.
Grovetenders are the most universal deity-specific organization. Much like
the generic clerics of Habastly, the Grovetenders can be found in every
race. They exist on every continent and in every nation.
The goal of
every Grovetender is to protect the area that is assigned to her, generally
known as a grove. She must use her best judgment when the local residents
have legitimate complaints or needs. She must insure that no unnatural
beings or creatures exist in her grove. She must keep disease and natural
disaster from taking hold.
Having all
of those responsibilities, it follows that the Grovetender takes little
interest in the political workings of the nations and religions that
surround her. Few Grovetenders track down cultists or seek to topple leaders
that do not directly threaten their groves. They do not seek treasure or
fame. They don’t even look to covert creatures to the faith of Habastly, but
instead let the natural wonder of their groves inspire possible converts.
The
Grovetenders’ organization is a marvel of longevity and simplicity. For over
three millennia, it has existed in the same manner. Each Grovetender is in
complete control or her own grove, having to answer to no one except
Habastly himself in matters concerning it. In matters outside of the grove,
a Grovetender must obey the orders of only a Grovetender who watches over a
larger tract of land and the orders of the Grovetender of Habastalai, who is
also the high cleric. Grovetenders are appointed to their groves by the high
cleric, after they are nominated by non-Grovetender clerics of Habastly who
live in the area where a Grovetender is needed. It is believed that there
are more than 300 Grovetenders currently, making them the most prolific
deity-based organization of its type on Habololy.
