Tolan
Tolan hails from the northeast coast
lands of the Republic. The central government has less control there
than in other parts of the nation. And it is in this environment that
both fanatical patriotism and subtle counterculture both seem to thrive.
As a winged Gree Tolan developed a bit more slowly than other Gree but still
entered the military at the youngest possible age. After a few years, two
important events changed his life. The first was that he was selected
for the officers accelerated training program which allowed him to get his
commission in only two months (in exchange he committed to six additional
years of service). Only a week after his commissioning, Tolan’s mother
passed away. After the formal funeral Tolan’s father asked him to
watch over the guests for a little while. A few minutes later, the first
deputy consul asked for Tolan’s father and Tolan dutifully went to seek him.
Tolan was shocked to find his father praying before a small shrine to
Hemator, a deity whose faith is banned in the Republic. For several
weeks after, Tolan would not speak to his father and then left for
redeployment.
Six weeks later he was the junior officer in a rapid reaction team who
responded to calls for help from an isolated village in the far northwest
under attack by wyvern riding Vishtoo. When he arrived he found a
group of villagers, led by a Grean sorcerer and a Half-Orc in a grey and
blue robe, fighting off the Vishtoo. Within a few minutes the
overmatched Vishtoo fled and the village appeared secure. After the battle,
Tolan’s commander ordered the razing of the village. Tolan questioned
the order and was told that the villagers were worshiping a god that was
outlawed in the Republic. Tolan refused to fight. The villagers fought
back and only a few of Tolan’s comrades survived. They were captured
by the Half-Orc and the Sorcerer. During his capture, the orc Mercek
and the Sorcerer Abath, talked to Tolan about some of the other deities and
the ones they worshiped. The villagers left their captives and warned them
not to follow or try to find them. Tolan and the surviving captives
returned home where Tolan was arrested and scheduled for transport to the
capital for court martial. The night before his transport Tolan’s
father visited him, bringing his Family’s sword and freeing him from the
prison.
Tolan is now on the run from his own people. Helped by the Half-Orc
and Grean Sorcerer, Tolan left the lands of his birth to see more of the
world. With his experience fighting Vishtoo, the Orc and Sorcerer
suggested he join the Guardians at the Guardian Temple. In
repayment for their kindness, Tolan now works to assist those in the
Guardian Temple help prevent the destruction of the world.
