Equipment: The appearance of Vilanstri is dominated in one’s mind by
the presence of his great serrated sword, which is traditionally carried
over the shoulders without a sheaf. Blessed by Dedestroyt, the sword is
known to be Wounding and Vorpal. He wears no armor and carries no shield
or other weapon.
The current Stalker of the Dead has held the rank for nearly 150 years.
Before him, there were many who could not live up to the standard that
had been set by Kendel (see page 134). None of those earlier clerics,
however, could claim that he had been the one that killed the legendary
cleric.
Vilanstri grew up in the
constant service of the faith of Dedestroyt. His father saw to the needs
of his community as the local cleric, and Vilanstri intended to aid his
father and take over his father’s responsibilities when the time came.
Vilanstri was a cleric and a warrior of minor skill in the late 4th
century AC when the call came from the kingdom that the time had come to
put an end to the Umanin Kingdom. He joined many other elves that went
to war. His days in those battles against the Umanin taught him the true
evils that could be persecuted against a race. At every turn, the Umanin
would sacrifice a battle to inflict heavier casualties upon their elven
enemies, leaving their human foes nearly unscathed. At the head of the
carnage was Kendel. The war ended, along with the Umanin Kingdom. Kendel
was never seen again, although his followers began to worship him as a
deity.
Vilanstri never returned
to live in the jungle. He dedicated his existence to finding and killing
Kendel, a goal he claims to have achieved. After Kendel disappeared,
those clerics that took up the mantle of Dead Stalker never lasted more
than a decade. None had the notoriety of Kendel until the stories of
Vilanstri and his tracking and killing of Kendel began. Shortly after
the fall of the Tinkocracy, Vilanstri was recognized as the Dead
Stalker.
Vilanstri’s existence,
and that of every Dead Stalker, is to ensure that no creature unfairly
escapes death. Their primary targets are those that have been
resurrected. They travel the world with an innate knowledge of who has
been brought back from the dead. Although he is one of the most
even-handed Dead Stalkers ever, Vilanstri is still feared.
